Mississippians are warned to be cautious outdoors, as much of the state could experience out-of-control fires.
The National Weather Service has issued a significant fire danger alert in the Natchez, Brookhaven, Hattiesburg, Laurel, and surrounding areas. The alert, which goes through Monday at 6 p.m., calls for a halt to any open burning, noting that wildfires will spread rapidly due to dry and windy conditions.
Strong winds, low humidity, and dry conditions have increased the possibility that outdoor fires could spread quickly. Residents in all six coastal counties, as well as Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, and Lincoln Counties, are advised not to do any outdoor burning.
In central Mississippi and up through the Delta and part of the state’s northeastern region, an elevated danger alert has been issued, meaning fires are more likely to escape control. Burning is highly discouraged at this time.
