The Alcorn State women’s basketball team will continue its postseason run beyond the SWAC Tournament.
On Selection Sunday, the Braves (17-13) learned that while they did not earn an NCAA Tournament bid, they secured a bid to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The invitation comes as Alcorn State was the best available SWAC team, given that Southern made it to the Big Dance and Alabama A&M secured a spot in the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament.
The Braves will make their WNIT debut on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT when they host South Alabama in the Davey L Whitney Complex in Lorman. The winner will take on Purdue Fort Wayne in the second round. Alcorn State has been led by Nakia Cheatham this year. She averages 13.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game.
The full WNIT bracket can be found here.
Meanwhile, Mississippi State preemptively bowed out of any postseason appearance after not making the NCAA Tournament.
The Bulldogs (18-13) finished the campaign losing five straight games, including a first-round exit from the SEC Tournament. Sam Purcell has led the maroon and white on a pair of Big Dance runs, both of which ended in second-round losses, and will hit the drawing board to try to have his team back in March Madness next season.
