A shooting in Belzoni took the life of one and injured at least five others on Saturday, the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.
In a Sunday news release, the sheriff’s department said deputies, along with officers from the Belzoni Police Department, responded to “multiple” reports of gunshots on Silver City Road late Saturday. Upon arrival, they found several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
“At least five individuals were injured, and one person was pronounced deceased,” the release stated.
The deceased was identified Sunday as Greenville native Makayla Adams. Adams’ alma mater, King’s Court Christian Academy, posted on social media that Adams was in the class of 2022 and graduated as valedictorian.

“Makayla was an exceptional young woman – brilliant, kind, and full of promise. Her leadership, academic excellence, and gentle spirit left a lasting impact on our school family,” a portion of the post reads. “We extend our deepest prayers and condolences to her family, friends, and all who loved her. Though her time with us feels far too short, her legacy will continue to inspire us.”
No arrests had been announced as of early Monday afternoon, and no details have been released as to what led to the shooting.
The Humphreys County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact its office at (662) 247-2551. The investigation remains ongoing.
