A woman who acted as an accessory to a man who murdered his ex-girlfriend in Louisiana before taking her two daughters across state lines to Mississippi and killing the younger child will spend 60 years in prison.
Victoria Cox, 34, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and attempted aggravated kidnapping of a child in Louisiana. Prior to her court appearance, she faced felony charges of first-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping, but those were dropped as part of her plea deal.
Cox’s sentence is linked to the June 2024 killing of Callie Brunett by Daniel Callihan, and actions that followed. After taking Brunett’s life in her Loranger, La., residence, Callihan kidnapped her two children, Erin and Jalie, and transported them to Hinds County, Mississippi. Erin was 6 years old at the time and Jalie was 4.
When law enforcement in Mississippi tracked Callihan down at a home on Boozier Drive in Jackson, they also found the dead body of Erin. Jalie was found alive and transported to a local hospital. A gruesome indictment by a Mississippi grand jury later revealed that Callihan molested Jalie.
During his perp walk on June 14, 2024, in Hinds County, Callihan fessed up to the crimes and told reporters that he had asked for the death penalty.
“I have told them everything I did, and I have agreed not to fight it,” he said while being strapped into a police cruiser. “For what I did, lethal injection is the easiest thing for me.”
Instead, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. His time behind bars will be served at Angola prison in Louisiana.
As for Cox, the defendant was sentenced to 40 years in prison in Mississippi this past November. Her two sentences will run concurrently with one another. She is not eligible for parole or a suspended sentence, and is required to register as a sex offender.
