Two suspects are in custody after a triple homicide claimed the lives of two sisters and a 2-year-old child in Jackson.
According to multiple reports, Jackson Police Department Chief RaShall Brackney announced Monday night that two men – Cornelius Carter, 28, and Jordan Carter, 28 – had been arrested. The men are not related to each other, Brackney said during a press conference.
The arrests came after law enforcement attempted a traffic stop on Maddox Road that turned into a pursuit involving a vehicle that investigators believed was connected to the crime. The suspects were taken into custody more than a day after the bodies of Keyana Weathersby, 25, Camari Givens, 2, and Erica Weathersby, 30, were found inside a home in the 300 block of Queen Alexandria Lane on Saturday. Keyana was the toddler’s mother.
Cornelius Carter is facing charges of capital murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, while Jordan Carter is facing charges of capital murder.
Brackney told media outlets that investigators believe the shooting was targeted and that the investigation remains active.
Mayor John Horhn, who said Sunday that his office is deploying additional resources and working on a plan to fight gun violence, released a statement Monday night after the arrests.
“I commend Chief Brackney and the men and women of the Jackson Police Department for their work in identifying and apprehending the suspects in this brutal crime,” Horhn said. “We will continue working every day to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice. This effort will continue.
“My prayers are with the family and loved ones who are carrying this loss. No words can ease their pain, but you are not alone. Jackson, I’m asking you to lift this family up in prayer and surround them with support during this difficult time.
“The future of Jackson is in our hands. Working together, we will turn this city around and make Jackson a safer place, now and in the future.”
