Ole Miss wide receiver Deuce Alexander and kicker Lucas Carneiro each won SEC weekly awards following the No. 9 Rebels’ thrilling 41-38 win against No. 24 Louisville on Sunday.
Alongside LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt, Alexander earned the honor of SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his stellar performance against the Cardinals. The senior from Douglasville, Ga., tallied 159 receiving yards and two touchdowns on a mere five catches, an average of 31.8 yards per catch despite having to be helped to the locker room after an injury in the second half. However, he did make a return later in the game.
Alexander’s 159 yards mark a career-high and the first time he has had over 100 receiving yards in a game. Both of his touchdowns came in the third quarter, both times to take back the lead. Additionally, both touchdown catches were 62-yarders.
The week-one SEC Co-Specials Teams Player of the Week, alongside Oklahoma kick returner Isaiah Sategna III, is Rebel kicker Carneiro. The fifth-year player from Cornelius, N.C., accounted for 11 of the Rebels’ 41 points, including five extra points and two field goals.
Carneiro went 2-of-3 on field goals, all of which were over 40 yards, with the last one coming at the best possible time. As time expired, Carneiro drilled a 48-yard field goal to give Ole Miss the three-point victory. It was his third career game-winning field goal of 45 yards or longer, which is the most by any FBS kicker in the last 30 years.
Ole Miss will have their home opener on Sept. 12 against Charlotte at 6:45 p.m. The game will air on ESPN and participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations.
