Hitachi Energy is investing a record $528 million to expand operations in Mississippi.
The Swiss company’s investment is the largest of its kind in the U.S. to date and is expected to create 654 new jobs. Hitachi Energy will build upon its transformer manufacturing capacity in Copiah County.
“This is truly a massive win for Mississippi and the United States. Hitachi Energy could’ve made its largest investment in America anywhere in the country – but the company chose Mississippi,” Gov. Tate Reeves said. “Mississippi’s momentum is growing stronger every day, and it is our people who are building the future of American energy infrastructure.”
The company prides itself on being a global leader in electrification that manufactures transformers and other equipment to power homes, businesses and communities. The company’s current Mississippi facility produces small power transformers and employs 475 people.
The expansion will significantly increase Hitachi Energy’s production capacity and expand the range of small power transformers manufactured domestically, aimed at helping meet growing demand across North America while strengthening the domestic supply chain for critical energy infrastructure.
The project includes the purchase of a 45-acre site at the Copiah County Industrial Park in Gallman, the construction of a new facility, new manufacturing equipment, and infrastructure improvements.
“Demand for electricity is growing rapidly, and the grid must grow with it. This investment in Mississippi, our largest ever in the U.S., reflects our long-term commitment to American manufacturing and building the grid infrastructure that will help power America’s growth for decades to come,” Hitachi Energy CEO Andreas Schierenbeck said.
“We are pleased to work with the Trump administration and Governor Reeves to support investment in American manufacturing at a pivotal time for U.S. energy security.”
As is the case with many major economic development projects in the state, the Mississippi Development Authority is offering financial assistance through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive program, along with site development and infrastructure improvements. Copiah County is also assisting with the project.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with transformer production scheduled to start in 2029.
