The city of Port Gibson will be under a curfew following Friday’s homecoming festivities.
Port Gibson police announced that the curfew will begin at 10:30 p.m. Once it’s in effect, no activities or gatherings will be allowed within city limits. Officials reminded the public that law enforcement will also be on the lookout for events that may pose a public safety threat, noting that they will be shut down at any time, regardless of the hour.
“Please talk with your children and teens about the curfew and make sure they understand the expectations,” police wrote in an address to local parents.
“Please know where your children are, who they are with, and how they will get home safely. We encourage parents and guardians to make transportation arrangements in advance and ensure that everyone gets home safely after the game and festivities.”
A homecoming high school football game between Port Gibson (2-2) and Hazelhurst (3-2) will kick off at 7 p.m. Before that, the city will host a parade in the downtown area at 1 p.m. Authorities said there will be a heightened law enforcement presence at both events. Additional officers will also be patrolling throughout the city on Friday.
Police did not provide a reason for the curfew, though it’s worth noting that Claiborne County deputy Terrian Bailey was shot and killed over Labor Day weekend while attempting to control a crowd in nearby Hermanville.
At this time, 12 people are facing charges connected to Bailey’s death. Each suspect was denied bond.
