Alcorn State has hired former Florida State assistant Jake Morton to be its new head men’s basketball coach.
Following a Thursday morning report from Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports that a deal was in the process of being finalized, Alcorn State athletic director E. D’Wayne Robinson confirmed to HBCU Legends that Morton had put pen to paper.
“Jake Morton brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team,” Robinson told the publication. “He has a full understanding of our offensive and defensive schemes, and he will immediately have a major impact on our basketball team. Our players are going to love his work ethic, how well he relates to them, and his ability to teach the game of basketball.”
Morton comes to Norman after most recently serving as an assistant coach under now-retiring Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton. Before joining the staff at FSU, he served as an assistant at East Carolina (2023-24), Jacksonville State (2017-21), Coppin State (2015-16), Western Kentucky (2012-13), Miami (2008-11), James Madison (2005-07), St. Francis (2001-04), and Bowie State (2000). He played for Miami from 1989-93 before playing six years professionally in Israel.
This will be Morton’s first head coaching gig, taking over the program at Alcorn State after the announcement that Landon Bussie was departing to accept the same position at Chicago State University.
The Braves had an overall record of 11-20 with an 11-7 mark during Southwestern Athletic Conference play in 2024-25. The last time the program made the NCAA Tournament was in 2002.
