American Medical Response will soon be holding a free training academy for those aspiring to be emergency medical technicians in Mississippi.
According to a news release from AMR Central Mississippi, it will soon be offering the required 10 to 12-week EMT course at no charge in Jackson. Additionally, the ambulance provider will pay students during the course, and upon completing it, certified EMTs will begin working for AMR with a starting pay of $41,200 per year before overtime.
“Picture yourself or someone you know as an emergency medical technician on an ambulance helping sick and injured people,” the release asks. “You make a difference in patients’ lives multiple times each day.”
For those who complete the course and begin working, AMR will also pay future expense for higher certifications that create raises.
AMR calls its EMT course “Earn While You Learn.” The next course starts in early August. To learn about admission to the course, aspiring EMTs are asked to contact AMR’s instructor, Malcolm Robinson, at (601) 919-7860 or at [email protected] by June 27. Early inquirers will be invited to an info-filled open house at the company’s facility near the Jackson Medical Mall.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and a driver’s license, complete an interview, pass an entrance exam, take a physical fitness test, and clear a background check. Experience working in a medical setting is not required.
“Our in-house course is the shortest path to EMT certification and a career in the medical transport field,” said Robinson, a longtime paramedic who will be teaching his 16th course since 2019. “There is only one other source of EMT training in Mississippi that pays the students to take the course, and it is taught hours from Jackson. Our EMT course is the gateway to higher training with substantial pay increases at each level.”
AMR’s course includes classroom lectures, online learning, step-by-step mastery of hands-on skills, and simulations of real-world situation.
“Once you complete the course, pass a mandatory national exam, and go through our new employee orientation, you begin responding to and treating patients. Earn While You Learn EMT training at AMR is a golden opportunity to enter a profession unlike any other in the world,” Robinson said. “It’s not a job for everyone, but if you love helping people in need, it may be your calling.”
AMR, which is part of Global Medical Response, operates in 15 Mississippi counties.
