Incumbent GOP Representative Nick Bain is on the verge of being upset following the final tally from Tuesday’s runoff elections as he received 22 fewer votes than challenger Brad Mattox.
On Wednesday morning, Bain — a three-term representative from Corinth — was at 49.8 percent (2,322 votes) in comparison to Mattox’s 50.3 percent (2,345 votes).
Mattox, a gun store owner running on the platform of protecting small businesses and cutting taxes, was endorsed by third-place candidate and former Corinth alderman Chris Wilson heading into Tuesday. Per a report from the Daily Journal, Bain’s vote to replace the old state flag has been an issue among voters.
The remaining 45 affidavit ballots were counted shortly after 10:30 a.m., with the majority being rejected due to an incomplete mailing address or not being registered to vote.
In all, Bain received seven votes after the affidavit ballots were tallied, while Mattox had a total of six votes. Five absentee ballots are also expected to be processed within the next five business days, as well as any absentee ballots yet to be received that were post-marked by Election Day.
At this time, the final totals for each candidate have been reported to be 49.76 percent (2,329 votes) for Bain and 50.24 percent (2,351 votes) for Mattox.
Once the results are official, Mattox is expected to step into the role of the next representative in District 2 as there is no Democratic challenger set for the November 7 general elections.
