A 14-year-old in Rankin County was arrested on Tuesday after she was said to have killed her mother before trying to take the life of her stepfather.

The deadly incident happened on Ashton Way in the Farmington Station subdivision of Brandon, according to WAPT. The local TV station reported from the scene that deputies with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting call at around 5:07 p.m.

When law enforcement arrived, they encountered the stepfather suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He pointed deputies to the body of his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, who was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. He also said his daughter was inside the home holding a pistol before she fired at him. After a physical fight ensued in which he took the gun from her, the teenager fled the scene and jumped over the home’s backyard fence.

Additional agencies came in to help locate the teen, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol and its helicopter. At approximately 5:35 p.m., the female suspect was located not too far from the residence and taken into custody without incident.

The suspect has since been transported to the Rankin County Youth Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more details become available.
