No. 4 Mississippi State, No. 10 Southern Miss, and Ole Miss each ended the weekend with sweeps of their respective opponents at home.
Mississippi State (14-2) – coming off a one-run, midweek loss to Southern Miss – took it out on Lipscomb as the Mustangs from Nashville were outscored 43-7 across three games. The nail in the coffin was a 26-0, run-rule win on Saturday, making for the most the Bulldogs have scored in a game since 2010.
Noah Sullivan and Drew Wyers combined for 13 hits across the series, including a combined five home runs. Freshman Jacob Parker launched a long ball of his own in game two. Winning pitchers were Ryan McPherson (3-0), Tyler Pitzer (1-0), and Duke Stone (3-0).
In Hattiesburg – where Southern Miss pulled off the major, midweek win over Mississippi State before being upset by Nicholls a day later – the Golden Eagles (14-2) also had some pent-up aggression to get out. Southern Miss outscored North Alabama, 24-7, across three games, capping the series with a 9-2 win on Sunday.
Kyle Morrison had a highlight-filled weekend from the plate with two triples, two home runs, and nine RBI. Winning pitchers were Colby Allen (1-1), Grayden Harris (3-0), and McCarty English (1-0).
Ole Miss (15-2) went down early 2-0 in game one of Friday’s double-header against Evansville, but ace Hunter Elliott settled and the offense woke up to win 7-2. Game two was a run-rule, 14-2 win, and Sunday’s finale was an 8-3 win.
Leading bats for the Rebels were Will Furniss with seven hits and three RBI and Tristan Bissetta with five hits, a home run, and five RBI. Judd Utermark hit two home runs to close in on the program’s career record, nine behind Kyle Gordon’s mark of 48 set in 1987. Winning pitchers were Elliott (2-0), Cade Townsend (2-0), and Wil Libbert (2-1).
Upcoming midweek games include Ole Miss at Southern Miss and Mississippi State vs. Tulane in Biloxi. Both games will be played Tuesday at 6 p.m.
