CBSB: Ole Miss surges, Southern Miss drops two spots in latest D1Baseball Top 25

It was a successful weekend on the diamond in Mississippi and the rankings indicate such for two of the state’s college baseball programs.

Making a four-spot leap in the latest top 25 from D1Baseball is a red-hot Ole Miss club. The No. 13 Rebels (14-1) surged in the polls after walking off Murray State 8-7 in a midweek showdown and bringing out the brooms against Jacksonville State over the weekend. The series’ finale was highlighted by a 13-2 run-rule victory in eight innings.

Mike Bianco’s group will return to action on Tuesday at South Alabama with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. The Rebels will then return to Swayze Field to welcome their first SEC foe, No. 3 Arkansas, for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Southern Miss dropped two spots to No. 22 in the rankings after splitting its four most recent contests. The Golden Eagles (11-5) were trounced by Mississippi State in a revenge matchup on Wednesday — a game that was initially scheduled to happen a day prior, but was moved due to inclement weather in Starkville. Christian Ostrander’s club then back-doored a tough UNC Wilmington team at home over the weekend. The successful series was highlighted by a 7-4 rubber match win.

CBSB weekend recap: Ole Miss, Southern Miss, and Mississippi State win series at home

The Golden Eagles will play Texas Rio Grand Valley on Tuesday ahead of their conference opener versus Old Dominion. The series will start at Pete Taylor Park on Friday at 6 p.m.

Mississippi State remained unranked for the second consecutive week, despite an impressive midweek showing and a clean sweep over the weekend. The Bulldogs mauled Southern Miss 18-3 on Wednesday, then handled Queens with relative ease in the ensuing three-game affair.

Chris Lemonis and company will travel to the Gulf Coast to play Nicholls on Tuesday and Old Dominion on Wednesday at Keesler Federal Park in Biloxi. The Bulldogs will then return to Dudy Noble Field to host No. 11 Texas for the first time as an SEC opponent.
