A Mississippi businessman is confirmed to have passed away in a plane crash over the weekend.
Federal aviation officials are investigating after a private aircraft crashed along Highway 82 near the Mississippi-Alabama state line on Sunday afternoon. The crash claimed the life of well-known Columbus businessman Emmett Barry Sanford, according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
Sanford, 65, owned Trimjoist Corporation, a manufacturer of wood floor framing products.

Sanford is the only person reported to have been involved in the accident. At this time, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are assessing the cause of the crash.
