A couple who had been married for over 50 years died in a Lafayette County housefire on Monday morning.

Rickey Wray, 72, and his wife, Cathy Wray, 74, were inside their home in Abbeville when it caught blaze. Firefighters responded to the scene at County Road 119 around 6:30 a.m. and were able to put out the fire, but unfortunately, the longstanding couple had already succumbed.

In response, Rickey and Cathy’s children have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for their parents’ funeral costs.

“We want to give Cathy and Rickey Wray the memorial service they deserve, to honor their memory, and say our last goodbyes,” the Wray’s daughter, Joanie Perez, wrote in the description. “I am currently asking for donations to help cover the cost of Cathy and Rickey’s funeral. They were the sweetest and kindest souls who loved everyone they met. Rickey was a Vietnam veteran and Cathy never was a stranger to anyone. The two of them had been together for 50 years and loved each other so much. They deserve to be at rest together.”

The Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Lafayette County Fire Department, and the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department are working jointly to investigate the incident. At this time, no foul play is suspected.
