COVID-19 continues to surge amid monkeypox concerns

Even though the global outbreak of monkeypox has absorbed most headlines as of late, the current COVID-19 omicron variant continues to surge across Mississippi.

On Tuesday, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) confirmed 1,094 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total number of cases up to 870,560. With six additional deaths, 12,609 Mississippians have now passed away due to the virus. In addition, there are currently 217 ongoing outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

Mississippi is averaging 1,445 daily cases over the last week, a 19% increase from two weeks ago. As of Monday, 1,555,540 Mississippi residents were fully vaccinated.
