A Friday night shooting in Humphreys County at a local game room has prompted officials to implement a curfew.
The Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office reported that the curfew was given the green light by the county’s board of supervisors on Monday. For the next 90 days, all restaurants, bars, lounges, and other entertainment-based venues are required to close at midnight. Minors are required to be at home by 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and 11:00 p.m. on weekends. The curfew will be lifted each day at 6 a.m.
The decision comes after three men were shot at a game room on Highway 49. According to officials, the goal of the curfew is to reduce an outbreak of violence not only in the county, but in the Mississippi Delta as a region.
“We know that it is a problem in the county, and we’re very concerned about the citizens of this county,” Humphreys County Administrator Deborah Edwards told The Delta News on Monday.
Humphreys County joins nearby Greenville in instituting a curfew amid persistent violence in the state’s most rural region. Recently, Senate Minority Leader Derrick Simmons urged all towns and cities in the Delta to take a “bold, proactive step” in implementing their own curfews to combat crime.
As for the shooting on Highway 49, law enforcement authorities are continuing to investigate the gunfire that wounded three. No arrests have been announced at this time.
