As portions of Mississippi continue to work toward recovery after 18 tornadoes tore through the state in mid-March, officials are encouraging residents to apply for federal assistance.
According to a release from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, 10 disaster recovery centers will open on Monday to serve residents in 11 counties who suffered damage during the March 14-15 storms. Staff will be on site to help survivors navigate the application process, with grants available for temporary housing, home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs.
The White House approved Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance on May 23 for individuals and business owners in Covington, Grenada, Issaquena, Itawamba, Jefferson Davis, Leflore, Marion, Montgomery, Pike, Smith, and Walthall counties.
The following disaster recovery centers will open on Monday at noon and then move to a daily schedule of 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Disaster recovery centers will be closed on Sundays.

- Pike County: Silver Creek Baptist Church at 8017 Silver Dr., McComb, MS 39648
- Smith County: Taylorsville Central Fire Station at 200 Eureka Rd., Taylorsville, MS 39168
- Walthall County: Walthall EOC at 908 Amory Dr., Tylertown, MS 39667
Residents in the approved counties who sustained losses during the mid-March storms can also apply for FEMA assistance online or by calling 1-800-621-3362. Those who are hearing or speech impaired should call 1-800-462-7585. The disaster number is: DR-4874.
