A delivery driver is behind bars for allegedly trying to steal the order of a retired Mississippi deputy left paralyzed in the line of duty.
Officials with the Madison Police Department said Monday night they received a call from retired Madison County Deputy Brad Sullivan regarding a DoorDash order he placed at Academy Sports. Sullivan told investigators he had placed an order for his son, and the app showed it had been picked up by a driver named “Dennis K.”
When Sullivan noticed the order may not be coming his way, he contacted Academy Sports with an employee informing him that “Dennis K.” had picked up the order. Shortly after, the transaction was canceled on the driver’s end, and when Sullivan messaged him, he said he did not have his order.
When the Madison Police Department got involved, investigators identified “Dennis K.” as Terel Tywan Hampton of Jackson.
“Through the cooperation of Academy Sports and investigative tools utilized by the Madison Police Department, it was determined that Terel had in fact exited the store with Deputy Sullivan’s merchandise, and the vehicle was identified,” a release from MPD stated.
Officers then located the 2016 Chevrolet Impala being driven by Hampton and pulled him over. During the stop, they located not only Sullivan’s order of two pairs of shoes, two shirts, and a pair of shorts but also marijuana and a firearm.
Hampton was arrested and charged with petit larceny, improper equipment, and possession of marijuana while in possession of a firearm.
Sullivan’s merchandise was returned to him, and Hampton was booked at the Madison County Jail. In September 2019, Sullivan was left paralyzed during an officer-involved shooting. The shooter, Edgar Egbert, was later sentenced to life in prison.
