Dr. Thomas Dobbs: “We are at negative bed capacity”

On Wednesday, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reported 6,596 more cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi.

The latest report brings the state’s total number of cases to 705,598. With the confirmation of 19 additional deaths—one being pediatric—10,774 Mississippians have passed away from the virus. It is the 10th pediatric death in a child under 18 from COVID-19. All 10 were unvaccinated.

In a video released by Dr. Thomas Dobbs, the state’s leading health expert said Mississippi ICUs currently have negative beds.

“We continue to see very severe stresses on our ICU spaces,” Dobbs explained. “We are at negative bed capacity at present in the state of Mississippi.”

Dobbs also continued to encourage Mississippians to get a booster dose. While more than 50 percent of residents are fully vaccinated, less than 30 percent of those eligible have received a booster.

“Please know that boosters are really necessary to combat Omicron. We know from recent data that a booster is about 90 percent effective in preventing hospitalizations in Omicron,” he said.
