The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s request to establish a burn center on its main campus in Jackson has been approved by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.

The Mississippi Burn Center at UMMC will fill a void created by the October closure of the JMS Burn and Reproductive Center at Merit Health, which had previously served as the state’s only burn center.

“This approval confirms our commitment to providing complex care to burn patients so they can receive timely care close to home and with the trusted expertise of Mississippi’s only academic medical center,” said Dr. Alan Jones, associate vice chancellor for clinical affairs at UMMC. “We want to keep burn care in Mississippi for Mississippians.”

UMMC, directed by the legislature to establish the burn center, will now work with the Mississippi State Department of Health to finalize accreditation of the Mississippi Burn Center.
