Federal aid is still available for Mississippians impacted by a tornado outbreak this past May.
The U.S. Small Business Administration said Thursday that disaster assistance remains available for residents, businesses, and private nonprofits impacted by the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that occurred in Mississippi from May 6-7.
The inclement weather primarily affected Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, and Wilkinson counties.
Officials added that those impacted by the conditions can apply for SBA disaster loans online, by calling the SBA’s customer service center at 800-659-2955, or by visiting an open SBA Business Recovery Center in person. The deadline to report damages in pursuit of federal assistance is Aug. 31.
“The SBA encourages anyone with questions about eligibility or the application process to contact SBA before the deadline, even if they have insurance or are unsure whether they qualify,” an official statement from the federal agency reads.
As for the storm itself, eight tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down, injuring 26 people and damaging or destroying more than 425 homes and businesses.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency opened six disaster recovery centers in July for storm victims to be assisted when filling out necessary paperwork for financial aid. Those centers have since closed, but funds are still available for those in need.
