A former Alabama mayoral candidate accused of embezzlement was arrested across state lines in Mississippi.
Anthony Britnell, Jr., lost his bid for Florence mayor last month and could now lose his right to vote. He was arrested in Itawamba County on an active felony warrant, according to the Florence Police Department.
The Itawamba County Sheriff’s Office contacted FPD on Sept. 2 and informed the department that Britnell was in their jurisdiction. Law enforcement later found the 32-year-old in the 100 block of Butler Drive in Fulton.
Britnell was placed under arrest without incident and is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center while he awaits extradition to Alabama.
Britnell lost in the Florence mayoral election on Aug. 26 to Ron Tyler. Under Alabama state law, anyone convicted of felony embezzlement automatically loses the right to vote and must complete their sentence before beginning the process of restoring voting rights.
