A former Guntown alderman and his cousin, a former city public works operator, have been arrested on charges of fraud or embezzlement in public office, the Mississippi State Auditor’s Office announced.
State Auditor Shad White announced Tuesday the arrests of William Daniel Davis, the former alderman, and Robert Lee Davis, the former public works director.

Between October and November 2024, the two allegedly conspired to defraud the City of Guntown by billing the city for the installation of a residential sewage line at a private residence belonging to William Daniel Davis. The alleged scheme resulted in a $9,950 loss to the city, according to the auditor’s office.
“Our team at the state auditor’s office has zero tolerance for those who think it is acceptable to steal taxpayer dollars,” White said. “We will continue to do everything in our power to find individuals who think they can get away with taking money from the taxpayers of Mississippi.”
Both men face up to 10 years in prison, as well as thousands in fines, if convicted.
