A former Mississippi high school athletic director has been taken into custody and is being accused of embezzling funds.
State Auditor Shad White announced Thursday afternoon that special agents from his office arrested Nick Coln. Coln previously served as athletic director at H.W. Byers High School in Holly Springs.
Coln allegedly received funds through CashApp from student-athletes to purchase athletic equipment and then converted those funds to his own personal use.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy for theft of taxpayer money at the Auditor’s Office” White stated in a news release. “Thank you to our investigators who helped uncover this scheme.”
Coln faces up to $5,000 in fines and five years in prison if found guilty.
White reminded people that suspected fraud can be reported to his office on the state auditor’s website or by calling 1-800-321-1275.
