A former federal inmate has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter following a fight in a prison housing unit in Yazoo City.

47-year-old Michael Phillips, a citizen of Jamaica, pleaded guilty to the death of another inmate at the Federal Correctional Complex on Tuesday.

According to court documents, Phillips threw a punch that caused the other inmate to fall backward into a metal locker. The inmate then hit the back of his head on the locker, with his injuries resulting in his death.

Phillips, who faces a maximum penalty of eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine, will be sentenced on July 7. A federal district judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
