A former Jasper County employee is behind bars for allegedly embezzling thousands in taxpayer dollars.
The Office of the State Auditor announced Thursday that Lacorsha Ellis was taken into custody for stealing approximately $11,181 during her time working for the Jasper County Solid Waste Department. She is said to have pocketed solid waste transactions for her own personal use instead of depositing them into the department’s bank account.
If convicted, Ellis faces up to $5,000 in fines and up to 20 years in prison.
“We will continue to hold the line when it comes to improper spending of taxpayer dollars,” State Auditor Shad White said. “We will continue to send a message that we have zero tolerance for theft of public funds.”
White reminded people that suspected fraud can be reported to his office on the state auditor’s website or by calling 1-800-321-1275.
