Former Ole Miss men’s basketball coach Rod Barnes is returning to Mississippi, this time to lead the Itawamba Community College men’s program.
Itawamba Community College announced Monday it had hired Barnes as its head coach. The Indians are coming off one of their strongest campaigns in recent memory, winning the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference regular-season title before making it to the NJCAA Region 23 championship game.
Barnes replaces Darrian Wilson, who was named 2025-26 MACCC Coach of the Year before stepping down to become the associate head coach at Jackson State under new head coach Trey Johnson.
“This is an exciting day for ICC and our men’s basketball program,” Itawamba CC President Dr. Jay Allen said. “Coach Barnes is a proven leader with a strong record of developing student-athletes and building successful programs. His experience at the highest levels of college basketball makes this a tremendous hire for the college. We believe he will be a great fit for our student-athletes, our campus, and our community.”
“Coach Barnes brings a level of experience, leadership, and respect that will immediately benefit the program,” Itawamba CC Athletic Director Dr. Chad Chase said. “He has won at a high level, recruited and developed outstanding players, and built excellent programs everywhere he’s been. We are excited about the vision he brings and look forward to seeing him build on the program’s success.”
Barnes, a Satartia native who returns to the game after a one-season hiatus, is best known for his time playing and coaching at Ole Miss. As a player from 1985-88, he earned All-SEC and All-American nods. He was later hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater before being named the head coach in 1998.
2000-01 is widely considered one of the best seasons in Ole Miss history as the Rebels won 27 games, captured an SEC West title, and advanced to the Sweet 16. Barnes was named Naismith National Coach of the Year and SEC Coach of the Year following the campaign.
However, after one more NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001-02, things went south as Barnes only found one more winning season in Oxford before being fired after the 2005-06 season. His record at Ole Miss rounded out at 141-109.
Barnes was an assistant coach at Oklahoma during the 2006-07 season before being hired as the head coach at Georgia State. He was 45-80 across four seasons there before it was announced after the 2010-11 season that he would not return as head coach.
Barnes was hired as the head coach at Cal State Bakersfield going into the 2011-12 season. He held the post for 12 seasons, highlighted by the program’s first-ever berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16. He was 210-231 at Cal State Bakersfield before suddenly resigning last September amid allegations one of his assistant coaches, Kevin Mays, was a pimp across four states. Mays now faces 11 criminal charges and will go to federal trial next month.
ESPN reported that Barnes received an anonymous email about Mays’ alleged criminal activity and did forward it to the university’s police department, triggering an investigation.
