The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and the Mississippi Beef Council are partnering to give veterans a special treat during the upcoming state fair.
Ag Commissioner Andy Gipson announced that veterans and active military will be treated to a free brisket biscuit during the 167th Mississippi State Fair. All they have to do is present a military ID when entering the fairgrounds, and they will be given a special wristband signaling that they can get a brisket biscuit.
“For the first time ever, we are going to be giving away to veterans and active military a Brisket Biscuit, a great-tasting handmade buttermilk biscuit with Mississippi Beef Council brisket on top. We are thankful for the partnership with the Mississippi Beef Council in making this happen for our veterans and active military who have so proudly served our country,” Gipson said, adding that there will be other offerings for former and active military members.
“Not only will veterans and active military members receive a Brisket Biscuit, but also military discounts up and down the Midway during the Mississippi State Fair. It’s the least we can do to thank those who have so bravely served and defended our country.”
The biscuits will be passed out at the popular Biscuit Booth within the fairgrounds. And, as always, other fairgoers will be treated to complimentary biscuits and syrup at the booth. Last year, over 100,000 homemade buttermilk biscuits were made during the fair.
The new brisket biscuits will be available Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The general public will have the chance to purchase them at the Beef Barn located near the Biscuit Booth.
“Mississippi beef producers are proud to honor our veterans by supplying the brisket that goes in the biscuit,” State Sen. Andy Berry, also the executive vice president of the Mississippi Beef Council, said. “Our farmers and ranchers are patriots and proud to support our veterans and appreciate their service to our country.”
The state fair will run from Oct. 8-18 this year. Visitors can expect a patriotic flair, with the theme being “Let Freedom Ring!” The fair will notably feature a military parade, along with the usual rides, food vendors, livestock shows, and more. The headlining music artist will be hip-hop star Flo Rida.
Tickets are available here and can be bought at a presale rate of $8. Tickets are $10 at the gate. Children 5 and under can enter free of charge. Parking is free. New this year is the “Patriot Pass.” For just $20, fairgoers can purchase a pass that is equal to three single-day use tickets. The pass can only be scanned once per day for up to three days. Essentially, purchasers of the Patriot Pass get one free day at the fair.
