Funeral arrangements have been made for a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy who died after his cruiser collided with a horse.
Deputy Joshua Brashears was 45 years old. A visitation for the fallen officer will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Moss Point. The service will immediately follow in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Vancleave.
On Oct. 17, the Mississippi Highway Patrol confirmed a crash had happened around 5:30 a.m. on Highway 15 near the county line between Harrison and Stone counties. Officials identified the deceased as Brashears, who was traveling home from a shift at the time.
Three horses were reported to be on the dark road when the fatal crash occurred before dawn, but information regarding where the horses had come from has not been released at this time.
Brashears had been with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department since 2023, working in the patrol division. According to his obituary, he worked for police departments in Colorado and South Carolina before coming to Mississippi. Before getting into law enforcement, he was a missionary in New York.
“Deputy Brashears was a valued member of our law enforcement family and a friend to many,” Sheriff John Ledbetter said in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss and extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to his family. His commitment to serving and protecting Jackson County will never be forgotten.”
Brashears is survived by multiple family members, including his two children.
