The voice of Ole Miss athletics is scaling back some of his play-by-play duties. David Kellum, who has been calling games for the Rebels since 1978, is handing basketball to another talented figure in the industry.
Kellum, whose official title within the university is Special Assistant to the Athletics Director, became the lead announcer for the Rebels in 1989. Over his 36-year span as the Rebels’ voice, he has called a multitude of high-level football, basketball, and baseball matchups — including the 2022 College World Series when Ole Miss won the national championship. But now, he will be passing a portion of the torch he carries to SuperTalk Mississippi’s Gary Darby.
Darby, a veteran radio broadcaster, confirmed to SuperTalk Mississippi News on Friday that he will be taking over the radio booth to call men’s basketball games for the red and blue. Darby, a familiar voice in Oxford, has called multiple games on behalf of the Ole Miss and Memphis Grizzlies’ radio networks. He is also the host of SuperTalk’s North Mississippi Spotlight, a show dedicated to what is taking place in the region.
While Kellum is stepping away from the broadcast booth for basketball games, his voice will still be heard on radio dials all over during Ole Miss football and baseball games. As always, Rebel games are aired on participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations.
