Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill is inviting Ole Miss fans to recapture a moment in recent history.
As locals and visitors continue to indulge in the snow globe town’s offerings, especially with major holidays looming, Tannehill encourages folks to stop by the “Greetings from Oxford” mural located behind city hall and take a picture with one of the goalposts torn down after the Rebels’ 28-10 win over Georgia.
“As I watched videos of the goalposts coming down University Avenue Saturday night, the first thought I had was, ‘Please do not let those poles hook our Christmas lights,’ Tannehill stated in a social media post. “The second thought I had was, ‘We have got to install a goalpost somewhere in town for photos!'”
While Tannehill is hopeful that people will come out in droves and grab a snapshot or two with the goalpost, a couple of rules do apply.
“Don’t climb or hang on the goalpost. It was welded back together for a prop but not strong enough for climbing,” the mayor added. “Don’t be a jerk. There is a camera right above the mural and it’s too heavy for you to run fast!”
Those who take pictures next to the goalpost are asked to use the hashtags “#ourtownourteam” and “#goalpostpics” when posting on social media.
As for the football team that made such a memorable moment possible, Ole Miss moved up five spots to No. 11 in the latest College Football Playoff poll following the convincing victory over one of the sport’s most prominent powerhouses.
The Rebels have two opponents, Florida and Mississippi State, remaining on the regular season schedule. If Lane Kiffin and company run the table, they have a strong likelihood of making an inaugural playoff appearance.
