Hattiesburg High School’s Tony Vance announced his retirement on Monday, departing as the program’s winningest head coach after 12 seasons at the helm.
Vance, who was hired by Hattiesburg High in 2013, led the Tigers to three undefeated regular seasons, four region titles, and two state championship appearances. His record in the Hub City wraps up at 97-54, including a 13-1 mark in 2024.
Vance, 49, made the announcement public via an X post, in which he wrote:
“To the City of Hattiesburg, Mayor (Toby) Barker and other elected officials, Board of Trustees, our superintendent, district administrators, current and former players, coaches, and loyal supporters: For 12 years, my family and I have been thankful for the wonderful people that welcomed me and my family with open arms and genuine support. We have been fortunate to create lifelong friendships and meaningful relationships. I am excited as I anxiously await what lies ahead in retirement, as my time in this great district comes to an end.”

Prior to accepting the position in Hattiesburg, Vance was head coach at Charleston High School from 2008-2012. There, he was 60-10 over five seasons with a MHSAA Class 3A championship ring earned in 2011. His 17-year career finishes at a 157-64 overall record.
During his last few seasons at Hattiesburg High, Vance was afforded the opportunity to coach his son, Deuce. Deuce played quarterback for the Tigers, winning the 2024 MHSAA Class 6A Mr. Football award before recently signing with South Alabama. The younger Vance also went to social media on Monday to thank his father for being a role model to not only him but hundreds of student-athletes over his career.
“I want to congratulate you on a successful career,” Deuce wrote, pairing the caption with a video of the two over the years. “You’re LEGENDARY!! I appreciate you for taking time away from our family to go be with other kids no one will understand that, and I appreciate you for impacting the youth. I LOVE YOU old man continue being great.”
