As is customary in Mississippi, many Fourth of July celebrants will express their patriotism on boats across the state’s vast multitude of waterways. To ensure the safety of the public, a heavier presence of officers with the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will be present statewide.
Conservation officers will take part in “Operation Dry Water” during the upcoming holiday weekend. The operation is a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing alcohol and drug-related boating accidents and fatalities.
According to officials, the initiative focuses on increasing public awareness about the dangers of boating under the influence and enhancing law enforcement visibility to deter impaired operation on the water.

“These officers will be on high alert for signs of impaired operation and unsafe boating practices to ensure a safe experience for everyone on the water,” a statement from the MDWFP reads. “Boating under the influence is not only illegal but also significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death. Alcohol impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction time, all of which are critical factors when operating a vessel.”
Authorities urge boaters to designate a sober operator and for everyone to always wear a life jacket, follow navigational rules, and remain alert while on the water.
Likewise, the Mississippi Highway Patrol will have a heightened presence of state troopers along highways and interstates this weekend to protect the public from drunk drivers and those who like to operate their vehicles at unsafe speeds.
