The Hinds County Board of Supervisors has unanimously agreed to move forward with purchasing and installing a memorial to commemorate fallen deputies.
Officials say the monument will pay tribute to the courage, commitment, and service of area law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The shrine is anticipated to cost around $13,000. It will be displayed at the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office headquarters in downtown Jackson.
Installation of the monument is expected to take roughly one month.
“A special thanks to the [Hinds County Board of Supervisors] for their cooperation in bringing this project to fruition. It was our vision to place a permanent marker to honor the ultimate sacrifice of [Hinds County Sheriff’s Office] deputies spanning several decades,” Sheriff Tyree Jones said. “This project has now been designed and funded, and soon we’ll see it permanently placed as a reminder of their service.”
Earlier this year, Jones petitioned the board of supervisors to honor the lives of fallen officers, specifically Martin Shields Jr., a Hinds County deputy who was killed during a service call in Terry back in February. Board President Robert Graham noted that there was consensus support among his colleagues to bring the project to fruition.
At this time, no official date has been set for the memorial to be constructed.
