Ole Miss and UConn have mutually agreed to cancel a previously scheduled home-and-home series in football.
Officials with the UConn Athletics Department first announced the move on Wednesday. The Rebels and Huskies were slated to square off at Pratt and Whitney Stadium in East Hartford, Conn., in September 2027, before moving the contest down south to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in November 2028. However, the two programs agreed to call off the matchups.
This is not the first time in recent history that Ole Miss has had games against a nonconference opponent axed. Ahead of the 2024 season, the university announced that a future home-and-home between the Rebels and USC would not take place. After an away game at Wake Forrest in the most recent campaign, Rebel head coach Lane Kiffin announced that the Demon Deacons had elected not to travel to Oxford for a game slated to happen this year.
To fill two schedule voids, the red and blue tabbed Georgia State and Washington State as replacement opponents for the upcoming season. Both of those games will be played in Oxford. The Rebels’ full schedule can be found here.
Ole Miss will take the gridiron with a new face of the program after record-setting quarterback Jaxson Dart was picked by the New York Giants in the first round of the NFL Draft. Austin Simmons, a highly-touted southpaw, will take the reins of the Rebels’ offense with a myriad of weapons at his disposal. Pete Golding’s defense, after losing a lot to the draft, will also feature a multitude of new yet talented members.
Last year, Ole Miss fell just shy of College Football Playoff expectations after losing conference matchups against Kentucky, LSU, and Florida. The red and blue did, however, have notable performances versus Georgia, South Carolina, and a 32-point victory over Duke to rubberstamp double-digit wins in the left column for a second consecutive year.
Though expectations may not be as high as they were heading into last fall, Rebel faithful still anticipate another winning season and an action-packed gameday experience in the Vaught.
