The family of slain Ole Miss football player Corey Adams, along with law enforcement officials, is seeking the public’s help in identifying those responsible for a fatal weekend shooting in the Memphis suburb of Cordova.
On Saturday around 10:15 p.m., deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire outside a residence on Fern Gland Cove. A shooting victim, later identified as Adams, was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving measures were attempted by first responders.
Four other victims, whose identities have not been released by authorities, are reported to have been transported to area hospitals by private vehicles. Three of those victims have since been released from medical care facilities with the other in noncritical condition.
Shelby County Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner held a press conference Monday with updates on the fatal incident. Buckner reported that Adams, along with more than 100 people, was at a pool party at the residence. When investigators assessed the scene, they found more than 40 rifle and pistol shell casings.
No suspects have publicly been identified at this time, and no arrests have been announced. An active homicide investigation is underway, and Buckner is asking homeowners of residences surrounding the crime scene to send any video footage they may have from Saturday night to police. Additionally, officials are asking the partygoers to provide information about the shooting.
“We have far more questions right now than we have answers,” Buckner said. “We know that more than 100 people were attending this party. So, we know people saw something or heard something. There are houses, other houses, around where this pool party was held.”
Adams’ mother, who was also press conference, said her son was not involved in any nefarious activities that night and was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. In an impassioned plea for closure, the victim’s mother asked anybody with information to come forward and help attain justice for Corey.
“I’m asking anybody to just help me get closure by getting justice for him. My son would do anything for me, and I can’t do anything else for him, being that he’s gone,” she said. “He didn’t do anything wrong. My child was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I just want justice for him.”
Adams’ younger brother echoed his mother’s sentiments, further contending that Corey was a stand-up person who did not deserve to lose his life. Acknowledging that the freshman Ole Miss defensive lineman was embodied by his passion for football, Adams’ brother noted that Corey did not have any known conflicts with others.
“My brother didn’t deserve this, man. He really just wanted to play football,” he said. “My brother, he was a great person. He never did nothing wrong with nobody. He never had like beef with nobody or no problems. He just wanted to have fun, and this one time, he was there at the wrong time.”
Anyone with information relating to the shooting is urged to contact the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office at (901)528-2274 as soon as possible.
