Inmate killed at Parchman prison Thursday morning identified as Raymond Coffey

An inmate was killed at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman early Thursday morning.

Burl Cain, commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, reports that the incident took place around 2:00 a.m., according to corrections officers.

The victim, later identified by Sunflower County coroner Heather Burton as 23-year-old Raymond Coffey, had been incarcerated for a total of four years for burglary.

Officials said the unidentified attackers were apprehended with video evidence. The matter will be referred to the district attorney for criminal prosecution.

Investigators with the Corrections Investigative Division of MDOC, along with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, are investigating the incident.
