An investigation is underway following the death of a DeSoto County inmate.
Officials reported that Reccardo Walton, 42, passed away on Wednesday. Walton is said to have been discovered unresponsive in his housing pod. After corrections officers attempted life-saving measures, the inmate was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven, where he died.
Walton had been detained for roughly 22 days on drug and firearm charges. At this time, no foul play is suspected in his death. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assessing this case.
This is the second inmate in Mississippi to die in a week’s time after an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution Yazoo City Medium passed away on Sunday.
