The death of a Lee County inmate is under investigation.
Sheriff Jim Johnson reports that an unidentified female inmate was found unresponsive on the floor of her cell in the Lee County Adult Detention Center.
“Detention center staff immediately rendered medical aid and requested emergency medical services be dispatched. The inmate was transported by ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased,” the sheriff stated.
Investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement responded to both the hospital and the detention center to begin an assessment into the circumstances surrounding the death.
At this time, investigators say they have found no signs of foul play and the death appears to have stemmed from a medical emergency. An autopsy will be conducted at the Mississippi State Crime Lab..
The results of the autopsy, along with the investigation findings, will help determine the cause and manner of death. Once state officials conclude their investigation into this case, they will submit findings to Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office for review.
