A Jackson County deputy passed away after his cruiser collided with a horse on Friday morning.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports that the accident happened just before 6 a.m. on Highway 15 near the Harrison and Stone county line. Officials identified the deceased as Joshua Brashears, who is said to have been heading home.
Multiple horses were reported to be on the road when the fatal crash occurred. As of now, no word has been given on where the horses came from.
“Deputy Brashears faithfully served the residents of Jackson County since joining the Sheriff’s Office in 2023. He was assigned to the Patrol Division where he was respected by his peers and the community for his professionalism, dedication, and compassion,” a statement from Sheriff John Ledbetter reads.
“Deputy Brashears was a valued member of our law enforcement family and a friend to many. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss and extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to his family. His commitment to serving and protecting Jackson County will never be forgotten.”
An investigation into the wreck is being handled by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
