A $29.8 million new housing development in downtown Jackson will bring nearly 70 low-income housing units to one of the capital city’s most historic areas.
Jackson leaders, developers, and other officials gathered in the Farish Street neighborhood on Wednesday to break ground on the development, which will restore or rebuild 67 homes for the project dubbed Leanord Court.
Louisiana-based Gulf Coast Housing Partnership (GCHP) led the development, an expansion that covers 5.8 acres and will offer high-quality, modern housing while “preserving the area’s historic character.”
“This development marks a significant milestone in preserving Jackson’s cultural heritage while expanding access to safe, affordable housing,” a press release from GCHP reads.
The homes will be reserved for those earning less than 60% of the area median income, which would be under $25,942.80 according to recent census data. Vouchers will also be available through the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority, which will cover half the rental cost for tenants.
Leonard Court will be comprised of a mix of 1 to 4-bedroom single-family homes and duplexes, complete with washers and dryers, smart thermostats, security systems, and shared community spaces such as a clubhouse and gazebo.
Construction started on the project in January, with some of the homes set to be completed as soon as the end of 2025. The estimated completion of Leonard Court is slated for mid-2026.
