Jackson man arrested for recklessly driving, killing pedestrian in Byram

A Jackson man has been taken into custody after a reckless driving incident left an innocent pedestrian dead.

Byram police report that the incident took place Monday night on Siwell Rd. at Main St. 37-year-old Corey Laird fatally struck 28-year-old Kiki Hawkins.

Laird was driving recklessly eastbound on Siwell Road. The suspect fled the scene of the accident, but later returned with an unidentified family member.

He is currently locked up at the Hinds County Detention Center on manslaughter, culpable negligence, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, and reckless driving charges.

Lab results are pending for Laird’s blood alcohol content at the scene.
