A central Mississippi man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to the murder of a 2-year-old girl.
23-year-old Jermarcus Kelly pled guilty to the charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of the toddler, according to Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens.
In March of 2022, Jackson police responded to a child abuse call at a residence on Troy Avenue. Law enforcement officers discovered the child unresponsive and suffering from acute injuries.
The 2-year-old was immediately taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson to receive emergency treatment, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Upon investigation of the incident, it was found that the young girl endured severe physical abuse under the care of Kelly, who was arrested after officers responded to the scene.
After entering his plea of guilty, Kelly was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
