An investigation is underway after a Jackson man was shot during a vigil for his recently murdered friend.

According to the Jackson Police Department, the incident took place Monday night along Lampton Avenue when a group of mourners were releasing a balloon in honor of the deceased. Around 9 p.m., a white vehicle backed into a nearby home before those inside the car began firing shots.

A man was struck in the back of the head by a bullet and is now in critical condition. His identity has not yet been released.

No arrests have been made at this time. As for who the vigil was for, police did not confirm that information either, but a 16-year-old by the name of Montrell Berry was killed in February 2023 in the same area.

Anyone with information linked to this case is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department at (601)960-1217.
