In a rematch of the 2022 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship, Jackson State once again came out victorious, defeating Southern 27-14 Saturday night in Baton Rouge, La.

The Tigers were behind 7-0 after one quarter before putting together back-to-back scoring drives to take their first lead of the night. Desmond Moutrie’s 15-yard touchdown run one minute into the second quarter tied the game before a 63-yard catch from Rico Powers put Jackson State up 13-7 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half.

The Tiger defense stood strong, not allowing any more points for the remainder of the half. Coming out of the locker room, Jackson State turned the opening possession into another score, this time a 21-yard touchdown run from Irv Mulligan to extend their lead to 20-7.

After Southern cut the deficit to just one score early in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard touchdown from running back Kendric Rhymes, the Tigers answered with a 75-yard touchdown run from Andre Hunt.

Virginia Tech transfer quarterback Jason Brown bounced back from an erratic game against Florida A&M last week to lead Jackson State. The Tiger defense accounted for two interceptions, one forced fumble, and five sacks.

Next up for Jackson State (2-1) is a road matchup at Texas State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
