Juneteenth events are happening across the state with one of the biggest taking place at the Two Mississippi Museums from now through the weekend.
The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and Museum of Mississippi History in Jackson will be offering free admission Thursday through Saturday. Sundays are always free at the museums.
In addition to the no charge, the Juneteenth Jubilee will happen on museum grounds on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and celebrate community, culture, and Black history, according to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
Juneteenth Jubilee inside the plaza at the Two Mississippi Museums is put on by the MDAH and sponsored by Ingalls Shipbuilding. The family-friendly event will include live artistic performances, yard games, a line dancing workshop, local food trucks, and a dedicated kid’s zone.

Throughout the free days, visitors will be able to explore the museums with a Juneteenth-themed educational guide and flash tour.
Juneteenth became a national holiday in 2021 with the purpose of honoring and remembering the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. at the end of the Civil War. On June 19, 1865, roughly 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were freed two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
