The No. 11 seed Mississippi State’s women’s basketball team’s First Four appearance to claim a spot in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 64 resulted in a dominant 70-56 victory over fellow No. 11 seed Illinois.

The first half was neck-and-neck, with the Lady Bulldogs (21-10, 9-7 SEC) holding a 31-30 lead at the half. However, it was all Mississippi State in the second half of the game.

MSU’s defense buckled down, holding the Lady Illini (22-10, 11-7 Big Ten) to just eight points in the third quarter while adding 21 points of their own by forcing turnovers and creating offense through the defensive side.

Senior forward Jessika Carter led the way for Mississippi State with 22 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. Senior guard Anastasia Hayes’ 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists also aided the Bulldogs in their victory.

Next up for Mississippi State is a Friday matchup against No. 6 seed Creighton at a time to be determined.
