Schools are closing and altering class schedules as much of Mississippi braces for the threat of severe winter weather.
According to the National Weather Service, brutally cold air will move into northern Mississippi on Friday night before moving down into the central and some parts of southern Mississippi on Saturday. It may bring with it freezing rain and sleet, hazardous travel conditions, power outages, and tree damage.
To ensure the safety of students and faculty, the following schools have announced schedule changes:
- Blue Mountain Christian University: Campus closed Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Classes moving to online format.
- Delta State University: Thursday afternoon classes moved to online format. Campus closed Friday, including cancellation of classes.
- Itawamba Community College: Students are encouraged, if able, to return home on Friday following classes. Residential students who must remain on campus are required to receive approval from the Housing Office.
- Madison County School District: All extracurricular activities and all school functions, both home and away, are cancelled beginning immediately after school on Friday through Sunday.
- Mississippi University for Women: In-person classes are canceled for Monday.
- Coahoma Community College: Friday classes will be dismissed by 1 p.m. For students who are unable to travel safely, residence halls will remain open, and dining services will follow an adjusted schedule.
- University of Mississippi: The Oxford campus will be closed on Monday. All university events and activities after 7 p.m. on Friday are canceled.
